Hi

Someone from IRCC had said something to me about needing to apply in person for your first passport, that you couldn't do it by mail. But I can't seem to find any information that says this on the passport info page.

Anyone have any insight on this?

More specifically: I am receiving my citizenship certificate in person at a ceremony. I’m needing to leave Canada right after though, to US, but want to apply for passport asap. I can’t apply the day after my ceremony as you need to wait 2 business days.

can I apply by mail from the US for my first passport?

Or I need to do it when I am back in canada in person? I’m a us citizen as well.

You can apply by mail from the US for your first passport. It's the same form for those applying from Canada or the US. However, if you want more urgent service than the regular speed, you do need to apply in person. However, the main benefit of applying in person is that you just have to show your citizenship certificate and you get it back, but when you apply by mail, you have to mail your citizenship certificate with the application. They will mail your certificate back after they process your passport, in a separate mailing. So you would be without your certificate for a while, as well as risking it getting lost in the mail sending or receiving (this has happened to some people here)

How do you know we have to wait 2 business days? What happens if you immediately apply?

The oath letter states it and they reiterated it during my in person ceremony. This won’t matter for virtual oath as by the time you get your certificate the system has processed your info.

I have an in-person oath, which is why I ask. Cheers, but I did some research and the two days is a recommendation rather than a strict rule.

If one would like to know for sure (important if you're travelling soon after the oath), they should check ECAS daily after the oath date. If the status says completed, then you're likely good to go.

Yeah I dunno. They insisted that I had to be in person the first time I applied. It’s also seemed odd to me, but that’s why I was looking for more info.

I don't see why you can't apply by mail from the US.... not sure why that person from IRCC advised otherwise...
