Once I have common-law status, there is an application wait time of 14 months... During that time, do I have to live in my home country, or can I continue to live with my common-law partner in Canada?

What country are you from, and what kind of status do you have in Canada now?

I'm from the United States. I'm here as a visa and got it extended in order to create a common-law partnership.
as long as you can prove commonlaw status, there is no wait period for submitting an application. you can submit it the day after you become commonlaw if that's what you want to do. you can continue to extend your current stay and remain in canada as a visitor while the application processes. you do not have to leave, unless an interview is called - which is very unlikely for us applicants assuming the application is straightforward. it's recommended to request a 12+ month extension so you don't have to keep paying money to extend your stay. pr applicants are rarely denied these type of extensions.
