Dear Experts,

I am from India and planning to move to Ontario/ Canada on Jan/ Feb 2017. And I would like to apply for the Ontario Driving License - G2(have more than 2 years Experience) when I land there.

My question here is:

I have below documents

1. Indian Driving License(issued on 2010 and expires on 2024)
2. International Driving License (got couple of days back)

Does the above documents is enough to apply for the G2 Driving License in Ontario.

Please provide me your expert comments and thoughts.

Cheers,
HariBS

I suggest you go through: https://www.drivetest.ca/licences/licence-exchanges/foreign-licence-experience-credits.html to understand the requirements for getting the foreign license credit. Call up drivetest if you have any outstanding Qs. I did an exchange for G-license, so can't really help you any further.

You can not directly get a G2.
You first need to write a test and get G1.
Then with Indian experience, you can get a waiver on the waiting period between G1 and G2, which is normally a year.
To get this waiver, you will need your original Indian license and a driver's extract from your RTO.

There are many threads running on this topic, you can find the template of the RTO extract (letter) there.

I have Indian license since 20016. i passed vision test and written test with 100% score. i didn't have to wait or submit any extract to appear for G2 road test. however the failure rate in G2 is pretty high more than 50% . may be i was not very confident because i didn't consult any driving school here . i just rented a car 2 day before and practised in the road. the assessor failed me for silly mistakes like parking break not on at parking. no indicator before leaving from parking and driving slowly and being extra cautious. later i did some research and found out that more than 50% ppl are failed for some reason or other. not need to get demotivated. Need to book another road test in 10 days now.

Sometimes, the person at Service Ontario can be accommodating and may accept just your Indian license to waive off the wait period.
It happened with me as well. Although I did not ask for any waiver myself, the officer himself asked if I was carrying my original Indian license.
After having a look at it, he waived off the wait period.

But, one should not depend on such instances where the officer is way too friendly.
The legal documented process says that if you want a waiver, then you should have a driver's extract in addition to original license.
And people wanting to have their wait period waived off should be prepared with this extract, rather than relying on goodwill of Service Ontario officer.

Just my 2 cents.

I my case I needed to write the test to immediately get the G1, and then bring a letter from my embassy stating my past driving experiences to skip waiting period for the G driving test.
