Regulated Occupations
About 20 per cent of Canadians work in occupations that are regulated to protect the health and safety of the public. Examples include nurses, engineers, electricians and teachers.
In Manitoba, as in all provinces of Canada, there are legislated regulatory bodies responsible for establishing the entry requirements for the occupations under their mandate, for recognizing prior credentials, training and experience, and issuing licences required to practise.
For example, to work as a nurse, your education and experience must first be evaluated by one of the professional regulatory bodies in Manitoba before you are licensed (registered) to work as a registered nurse (RN), licensed practical nurse (LPN), or registered psychiatric nurse (RPN).
[/font]The recognition process varies for each profession and trade. Recognition of qualifications and issuance of licenses can generally only be completed in Canada. The process takes both time and money.
The regulatory body responsible for your occupation may ask you to:
• provide documentation of qualifications
• undergo a language examination (which may differ from those required for immigration)
• complete a technical exam (with accompanying fee)
• do supervised work
• complete further study or training, depending on how the regulatory body assesses your prior education and work experience
