Those Carproofs aren't 100% and they can be wrong. The company "Car Facts" admits their reports aren't always accurate. (That's a US company and my uncle is a US car dealer.) I wouldn't waste my money on one.

It's better to have an experience car mechanic who knows what to look for review a car. Or listen to any rattles and feel for any jiggling in the driving. If you can have a friend recommend, that's great. Personally, anything car related we have my husband's cousin look at first. We will probably buy a car from him when we buy our next car. (Since he's family, we get discounts, yay.)

Also, in car talk, Calgary does NOT salt the roads and they only plow bus routes. If you drive in winter, a lot of your driving will be on packed snow and ice.

This is another reason I prefer transit. It's cheaper and someone else gets to deal with bad traffic or weather.
When I was trying to buy my car, I ran a Carfax (USA) report for a Toyota Corolla at first and I found that there was no collision or damage on the Carfax report. Therefore, I offered a price ($7,300) to the owner and made a deal.

Again, I ran a CarProof (Canada) report for the same car before paying the price and found that car was on rebuilt status and had serious collision damage on the CarProof report. The previous owner also claimed $8,500 from the insurance company to repair the vehicle. I asked him several times that was there any accident on the car and he informed me "NO". I had to spend around $60 for that CarProof report and it was worth it. Finally, I didn't buy that rebuilt car.

If you could spend more than $5,000 on a car, it really worth to spend another $60-$70 to get the CarProof report. You would get peace of mind.

This is my personal experience with CarProof and Carfax. Someone may have different experiences.

I agree with you bro,
Carproof you can get from $ 10, but $ 35 is one I recommend .
Hail damage and Rebuilt. These two are imp thing .
I prefer spending 8000$ in car which never claimed any hail damage or accident insurance claim, as if you buy similar car for 7000 with claim history then you won't get anything in time when you need to make claim,
People say buy 8000$ car and if you get any hail damage in say after 3 year you will get 3000 approx easily from insurance company if it never got hail damage in past .
Second I only looking for car from first owner , so 4-7 year old first owner car , yesterday I missed 2006 Honda accord for 6500 $. ,121000 miles just because first owner didn't get ready to take car to mechanic , later I regret for sometime that why I didn't took risk by buying without check as tats mint car good price but let see.

Good places to shop:

Near Chinook mall, there are several Outlet stores that clearance out merchandise.

- Liquidation World (multiple locations in Calgary) They stock baking supplies like corn starch and yeast much cheaper than any grocery including Superstore.
- XS Cargo (multiple locations in Calgary)
- Bianca Amor's (as far as I know this is the only location in Calgary) I went here yesterday. They have a huge new section open. Everything from 8x11 rugs, charging cables for phones, clothing, dishes, pretty much you name it. Very reasonable prices. Only downside it a) it's huge; b) it's usually messy and you have to pick through the crap to find the good stuff

Also, near Chinook, we have a place called Real Canadian Wholesale. It's part of Superstore, but does bulk sales. They sell pasta for 99 cents a bag, 12 packs of soda for $3.48-4 per case (compared to $5-6 at groceries), and much more. They also carry cooking supplies for restaurants, if you'd like high quality cooking instruments at a low cost - they aren't necessarily pretty, but they are sturdy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Carproofs aren't 100% accurate. There have been a great many cases when they are completely wrong. It's best to research this online. I wouldn't waste my money on one.... You're better off to educate yourself about cars. No Carproof can tell you if the car needs an alignment or new tires.

Carproof or Carfax cannot tell you if the car needs an alignment or new tires but you can get vehicle previous history such as accident, damage / collision info, any insurance claim, theft, lien, odometer rollback and etc.

If you want to know about the condition of the car, you need to take it to the car mechanic unless you are a mechanic or you have a good knowledge about the car.

Nothing is 100% accurate in this world even the car itself.

Mate I applied for 2 job within first week,
One Engineering job but after interview they ask me to spend starting couple of month in north of Edmonton as training then will be placed near Calgary and I denied as my we expecting baby in 6 weeks so I don't want to go away from Calgary. Other job is in Retail , waiting for outcome.

yesterday night bought car so today just looking for cheap insurance , winter tyre , breakdown cover etc .

It's 100k , approx 9 year old AWD SUV and I got it for approx 4500$ . Think it's good deal as I wasted over 2 weeks in looking car .

IF I get any work then it's fine else I can wait to start working in new year when my baby will be over a month old.

I am sure with good wishes and prayers of so many people I will end up in finding something good.

Do let me know if anyone arriving Calgary with family, I will pick you up from Airport if you haven't got any arrangement like hotel shuttle pick up etc.

One of my friend landed Toronto 2 week before us, he is quite good in English and qualified but after 6 weeks hard work he able to find Christmas job at one garment shop for $ 10.25 a month. And he told me that few people he met there in Toronto are moving Alberta too.
Not sure , but after comparing Toronto and Calgary situation i feel that Calgary is very quick if you need job depending upon your skills.

Here we had big Asian community. Though they say it got less then 10% of Asian population . You never feel like you in some strange land once you got couple of family friends . May be this because I living in NE .

You got a good deal on your car. Which model? Where did you buy? You can try auto insurance from the following links. I think you don't need full coverage as the value of your cars only $4,500. However, it's up to you.

http://www1.johnson.ca/ (I have insurance with them, got around 50 quotes when looking for auto insurance and they were lowest compare to others....more than three years with them)

If you find any other insurance company other than the above with lowest quote, please share with us.

I second that. People talk about how expensive Toronto and Vancouver are, but the prices seem inline with what we pay here!

If anyone needs help writing a Kijiji ad to find an apartment, PM me. I write "professionally." (Meaning I try to get my books published, but no one wants them!) I'm really very bored most of the time, so you guys need help, bother me :D

If you're planning on landing in Calgary, you can skip the French class. Only a quarter of a million people in all of Alberta speak French as their primary language. My husband is Canadian and can't even read basic French words (like colors, numbers).
