My wife, whose citizenship application is in process, has gone to India for 3 months. She called CIC before leaving Canada to inform about the absence. She was advised that because she is away for 3 months, she needs to inform in writing to CIC. CIC sent her an email and asked her to reply with a letter. My wife had replied to that email in writing and we have mailed the response to CPC-Sydney.

Following is the email that she got from CIC:
"Sir, Madam,

Thank you for contacting Citizenship and Immigration Canada. I am pleased to follow up on your request:

Unavailability

You can notify us of your period of unavailability in order for the local Citizenship and Canada (CIC) office not to schedule you during this timeframe. If your period of unavailability will be:

less than two (2) months and this is the first time you are informing us of a period of unavailability, then you can advise us with the dates you will be unavailable so that a note can be entered in your file.

two (2) months or more or you have previously notified us of any period of unavailability, then you will need to advise the CIC office processing your file. The mailing address and/or fax number for your CIC office appears on the letter you received.

You must send a letter indicating:

o your complete name and date of birth;
o address in Canada before departure;
o address abroad;
o name and phone number of a contact person in Canada;
o the unavailability period(s);
o availability if client returns to Canada for a short stay during the unavailability period;
o the reason(s) for the unavailability period(s);
o supporting document(s) regarding the situation, if applicable.

The responsible office will communicate with you if they require more information or when an appointment becomes available."
My wife received test date for February 07, 2014 in Mississauga CIC. However, she is out of country since mid-November and will return mid-February. In November, before departing we informed CIC Sydney of her 3 months absence in writing, as per their ask. Still we have received test during her absence. I will be calling CIC on Monday to notify the same and request to reschedule the test.

Wow that sucks man. Wish you the best on the re-schedule!

nice to see Julyer's applications moving along. Absolutely no updates on my side :(... I fear I am the ideal RQ candidate with the number of times I have travelled!

When dealing with CIC in the current environment its best to drop everything and show up for the test. You have to provide a reason for the no show and if its not acceptable as per operational bulletin back in Sep 2013 the file will be administratively closed. The only acceptable reasons CIC have indicated pertain to serious medical conditions and/or bereavement. Even if they accept your reasons test scheduling could be 6-12 months away and/or worse you will be issued an RQ! Make the test is the message or else CIC will/ could turn this into an ugly and miserable experience for you!

Hi Msafiri - You are right that test should be 1st priority... But that is true if someone is in the country... My wife is already in India..and we informed of her absence way back in November before she left Canada. We informed CIC of her exact departure date (in Nov) and exact arrival date (in Feb). Even then CIC scheduled her for a test during here absence. I'll inform CIC that they scheduled for exam in error.. we informed of absence in writing.... We have no option but to reschedule the test. We do not mind waiting for next 6-12 months for test appointment... even if we get RQ... we are living in Canada and will be living here for rest of our lives.. so we do not care about RQ or processing times...

I will mark this post to add to a collection of incidents where CIC has been scheduling events despite people notifying of absence. I've seen it before.

So following the rules of informing of absence not only probably raises risks for RQ in perspective, but also may not work for an applicant and create unexpected confusion and put a person into a difficult situation.

You should never count 100% on this absence notification and should keep checking ecas and mail.

You can never relax with CIC!

You shouldn't have problems rescheduling a test, if you had sent that letter.

It would better if it was matched with your file (not guaranteed), notes created in your file and you have evidence of sending this letter, just in case.

It's CIC's error and they should just reschedule the test.

However, if possible, it still would be better to just appear on test instead of rescheduling it.

Dear All,

Sorry for intruding into this thread for July 2013 applicants.

I am completing my application and intend to send in a couple of weeks. I have a very basic question. I am thinking of giving the home address of someone I work with as my own home and mailing address (I might be going out of Canada for work). I have heard people giving the address of someone they can rely on for receiving the mail.

But, I was curious to know what kind of information is provided in the letters/documents sent by CIC (from acknowledgement to call for test/oath). I can trust that colleague with my mail and scanning the document and sending it to me, but I am not comfortable in sharing my personal information like date of birth, etc. with anyone outside my family.

Thanks in advance !

Congrats Kw8Un0NK...

I called CIC yesterday, to find out options for my wife's test. Because I was not a representative on my wife's citizenship application, the agent could not look into her application to find out if a note was added about her absence. The agent mentioned that when my wife comes, she needs to write an explanation within 60 days why she couldn't attend test. Anyhow, my wife wanted to attend test on Feb 07 and can accomodate her early departure from India, so she has changed her ticket and is coming early to attend test.
