If it is a normally paid position you can not volunteer. It's hard to tell without knowing the details of the volunteer opportunity! I've been weary of volunteering so far because the lines are so blurred.. but I will be volunteering at a fitness seminar with my husband come November!

Yeah, applied november 6th received AOR Jan 3rd. BUT there are people who received AOR just a month later and they applied early January so it feels like we are getting close!!

So I just got off the phone with the call center about whether my medicals have been received or not. But anyways I also asked about the 11 months and the gentleman told me that due to the huge backlog it will likely stay 11 months. I was hoping it would go down like in the 2011/2012 thread but we are probably not going to be this lucky.

What jellyfishy meant is that if its normally a paid position (not for you but other people COULD get paid for it) then you shouldnt do it as you dont have a work permit

If I got the offer I wouldn't do it. But that's just me personally. Even if you are just assisting, other people could potentially be paid for the same work. The line is like I said earlier blurry.

I like to use this as a guide. While directed at students, it outlines what kind of volunteer work needs a work permit and what doesn't.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/institutions/work-volunteer.asp

Edit:

Also, as my rule of thumb of whether I can volunteer or not, I ask myself "Are the people I work WITH (not for) getting paid?" If they are then I shouldn't do it, if they aren't paid then I am good to go!

Hi,

Since I am on implied status, I wanted to knw if I can do some volunteer work. It's a center for seniors near Mississauga and it will be for 2-3 days a week.I have shared with them that my application is in process.

Also, they have given me a form for volnerable sector Police Records Search. If I wish to do this .....I will have to get this police check.

Please advice if we can do volunteer work and also getting this police check is ok?

Thanks all
I've been volunteering with children more than a year now (before I sent the PR application and I had to do police check with this non-organization). I also typed into the PR application as they asked if I do any volunteer. Right now I also volunteer at the gym.

For my point of view I think it is ok to meet new people, improve my English and at least I have something to do not just stay at home.

Once you get the AIP, does it still take 3 months more to get OHIP? Note that the person is already in Toronto, on an OWP.

I'm pretty positive you can get OHIP as soon as you get your OWP.

I got my State Police check today in the mail today and then it hit me...I'm waiting all this time for my FBI and State check and by the time they see it (11+months) it will be expired :-\ I feel like if the wait is this long for inlanders then maybe the validity of certain documents should be expanded....esp when you have no criminal history or major health problems. Just my two cents.. :)

Your FBI/police certificate won't expire, as long as CIC receives it within 3 months of when it was issued, and you don't leave Canada.

I agree completely. I have to pay for my UK police clearance and it costs £25 each time. Just absolutely ridiculous. Is it all police certificates that has to be renewed after a year? :)

Really? You paid only £25? That's cheap. Last time I paid nearly £100 coz I used to live in London, UK for 5 years :(

Hi,

I'm planning to apply for my spouse from Canada. (waiting for the marriage certificate to come)

Can someone please tell me the details regarding the open work permit part which we can get after 1st stage?

We are also planning to travel outside country (for a month) after applying for the immigration.
Can someone please clarify if I can travel during the processing of my application because I heard they can void the immigration application if you travel outside Canada?

Also, I will appreciate if someone can share their timeline who recently applied. Does it really take 11+8=19 months to get the immigration?

Thanks in advance,

Gaur

THIS MESSAGE IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE PEOPLE PLANNING TO COME TO CANADA.
THINK TWICE.
BETTER DON'T.
Sorry to hear about your experience.
It was six months for the first stage approvals before the STRIKE which has ended recently. It sounds like it was a big mistake to go with inland over outland for you. I would recommend to drop your inland application and start over with outland if you have no patience to wait in Canada.
