u can carry more than 7 kg in air india , they dont weigh ur hand luggage .

u can carry laptop bag and ur hand luggage .

so in that way ur laptop bag can also have more things ,like ur documents .

they some times allow those medium sized bags , trolley bags .

Yes, you can carry clothes in your hand carry.

Avoid edible things. Immigration guys can ask you to throw it in trash bins. Also avoid carrying perfumes, shaving gels, oils, and such liquid stuff as well as don't carry small knives, scissors, nail cutters, razors etc...

You can carry books, novels for your reading during travelling, camera etc.

It is better to have all your documents in hand carry.
