I keep wondering this. I don't know about you lot, but I'm often worried what happens if our application gets denied. What are the chances of that happening and what would be the reasons? Especially for common-law couples!

I believe most common reason for common-law rejection is not proving you guys are living together for a year.

Financially we couldn't prove one year, we did provide proof of joint bank account. A 6mth lease agreement (2 of them) and me having a years IEC working holiday.. Oh and statements from his side of family and friends. I couldn't get it from mine and I remember we didn't explain why I think. Oh dear life!!

you should be fine. You live together in Canada, you come from a country that has a standard of living superior to Canada - you have to reason to be suspected to trying to gain entry into Canada via a marriage of convenience.

UNless you're a criminal or have a medical reason to be rejected, there are very few chances that you would be rejected. If you can prove that you lived together for 12 months and your relationship is genuine, it should be no problem.

2 leases of 6 months makes 12 months, so you qualify as Commonlaw.

That's great news, Sweden you've really helped clarify a lot of doubts of mine :)
I did include a copy of my IEC visa too which was one year. Plus all the stamps from the previous visits and us traveling to Hawaii, Scotland, England and Greece together :)

Hi guys! I think the fear of rejection is an everyday feeling for the applicants! We all have (or believe to have) redflags. Every application is diferent and when we read other people's comments on their apps we think "ididnt add that!" Or we realized mistakes or anything... The long waiting makes the incertitude almost unbearable!
In our case, our redflags seem to be: out of status for 6months (overstay of a student visa) and our age (he's 25 and Im 23) some people here dont believe in a young coupñe marriage.
We will be celebrating our 2 year married, 4 years total as a couple, 3.5 living together.
I was raised in a country where we get married young and my husband always dreamed of getting married as his grandparents did (rest of his family is sort of against marriage at all) so for us, marriage wasnt a joke and was a decision made forever. Anyway i keep listening from people calling my hubby "my boyfriend" and when i correct them (showing my wedding ring) they say "marriage so young is not real". So i cant avoid thinking that the visa officer will think the same no matter how many proofs we have :-(
So i really think each one of us has a reason to believe that rejection is possible.. And, it is! So i just can say God bless and good luck everyone!
Is not east to convince someone that never saw you and your partner together of all the love you have for each other!

You're totally right! And whoever says being married young isn't a genuine married are probably jealous! My boyfriend is 25 and I'm 23 myself too.. Yet not married just common law, I think my parents are going to be pretty choked if we were going to become engaged! I'm worried mostly I feel like there are information I don't know about and I end up doing the wrong thing. My boyfriend thinks I'm over reacting a little too.. I certainly am a person who worries a lot for god knows why :)

What factors in marriage case leads to to rejection? And what about the financial conditions? My wife (sponsor)is not job right now. Secondly she stayed in with me after marriage for very 2 months and she is back to Canada.?

Thanks for your comment! :) As I said, I think is entierly cultural, I was raised to know that by the time im 20 I should be married or engaged... Im telling you! Right now I have friends of my high school that are having their second baby after 3 or 4 years married.. and Im the only one writting "no baby yet!"...
I was lucky to find a guy that -despites society and his own family- always dreamed of getting married young, fund a family and have lots and lots of years of happiness.
I will understand your parents reaction! My hubby's parents were totally against it, but he was most of all raised by his grandma, who sit us both and discussed marriage with us, and give us her approval after that! It was so helpfull having someone that understood, cuz she kind of convince the parents and sisters to come to the wedding! They like me, but they just dont believe in marriage (some kind of free love of the 70's I guess!) they believe marriage is to tide someone to you.. and love should be free! Anyway, each one believe what they want, and Im so happy they understood their son really wanted to marry me :)

Hey, you guys applied on febreaury 2013,... can u update me with your progress? (i applied in march) it will be a good way to know how are they advancing!
good luck and god bless!

To answer the question - I was just reviewing Open Data's approval rates for another post. Vegreville has a 91% approval rate.

The biggest issue in any spousal/partner sponsorship is genuine relationship.

Your leases should be fine for cohabitation.

Hi amikety!
Where did you found the approval rate? When you say Vegreville, you mean files that stay on vegreville or that also includes files that where sent to vegreville and then transfer to a local office?
91% is great! Give us all more hope !:)

Good luck and God bless!

I just copy/pasted my other explanation because I'm lazy:

You can view Open Data for better break downs on approvals. www.data.gc.ca

Search for "immigration" then subheader under Citizenship and Immigration Canada as the "author." Scroll to: Permanent Resident Applications Processed Abroad and Processing Times. This shows approval rates. Move down the page to "Family Class" then "Spouses, Partners, and Children." Exactly 84% Cheesy (That's OUTLAND!)

If you go to the 4th tab over (look at the bottom of the screen - that took me FOREVER to figure out), you can see Family Class > Spouses, Partners, and Children has an approval rate of 94% through CPP-Ottawa. (I set my view preferences for Spouse, Partners, and Children, so it was easy for me to find.)

This is also the same place you can view the breakdown of how fast applications are processed. If you're nerdy like me, it's full of lots of information you may never need! Cheesy

As far as broken down, it was, but I don't remember how thoroughly.

Edit: I noticed my :D faces now say "Cheesy" in the copy/paste. Awesome.

Where does my applications go to after vegreville then? It's inland and we live in the Calgary area :) is that still over 90%? And we didn't include anything like chat logs, emails or stuff like that. Just two 6 month leases and a few mails being sent with both our names on and proof of him being joined to my bank account :)

If you're transferred to the local office (you don't want that), it will go to the Calgary office.
