Hi All, I see 1300 jobs in NYC for my IT skills(Java related) and 300 in Toronto. I have Canadian friends tell me that the job market in Canada is very tight. Per them, even if I find something, the salary will not be great. I am seeking help from folks that have moved from states. While the input I have is from 10000ft, I am looking for insights at ground level on how the job market is over there. Thanks in advance.

Personal view but you cannot compare a city, NY with a population of 8.7 million with Toronto with only a population of 2.9 million so logically there would be less opportunities in any job field. As for salary you need to research cost of living in NY versus Toronto not just salary. It is common thing for immigrants to keep comparing what everything used to cost in their home country versus what a salary in Canada buys.

Its very tough in general to get calls and land job eventually. Requirements would always be less, since there are no native Canadian companies who manufacture software. Most of the requirement are support kind of and Software development work, particularly which pays well comes from USA, who would prefer it to give it to India and China than Canada. What motivation does US IT companies have to offshore their work to Canada? No Cost benefit or skills availability.

Even if you find the job, salary would be less , unless if you and your spouse (if applicable) works full time , even then you would be barely afford stuffs. its precarious to work without savings.

I recently moved from Boston to Toronto. If you compare $ to $, the salary is lower and the cost of living is higher. Job market is also not as big as the US cities like Boston or NY. However, I would suggest you look at your income percentile in NY and find jobs in that income percentile in Toronto. Making 100K CAD puts you in the top 5-10% I think. The overall standard of life would remain the same then. If you spouse works too, I don't think it will be an issue. Transition is always tough, specially the first year or so.

Based on my research IT or analytics jobs are paid at least 30 to 40% lower than the US. Yes $ to $ there is a difference in salaries..As compared to bigger cities, cost is living is very similar (probably a notch lower in Toronto) . I am not taking into account health care costs (immediate) as it is mostly covered by the employer if you are employed full-time .
