How advance can I apply to renew PR card?

I heard there is no specific time frame on this, but in reality, how advance?
I'm thinking of sending the application a couple years earlier, but does this put a red flag on me?
I also heard no matte how early I send the application, the reply comes in a couple months before the card expiration anyway.

I applied some months before my PR card expiry but I still got the appointment to pick my new card up right around the expiry date. I have heard of others who applied early and got their cards early.

If you have a good reason why you want your card early, say you are going to be outside Canada for a year and your card will expire during that time, if you put that reason down when you apply, they might not have a problem with it.
