Go straight to the border with positive LMO without applying for a WP first?

My employer has positive LMO with no name, he said it takes up to 3 weeks to 'put' my name on the LMO and then I can go to the border and apply there instead of sending the application and wait 2-3 months, is that true?
I'm on a tourist visa and it's about the expire, if it's possible to do that and the immigration officer will ask me why did I come to the border- is it okay to say 'because my tourist visa is about to expire and my employer needed me to start right away because of Christmas' or something like that?
If they decide not to give me the work permit and tell me to apply like everyone else, will they let me enter Canada again knowing that I'm looking to get a work permit?
Is it more safe to extend my tourist visa and go to the border after applying for the work permit online and getting an answer?

Thanks.
