My wife is a RN at the local ER here in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. While working she had occasion to walk into a room at the hospital. The floor of the room had been recently waxed but not polished. There were no warning signs. She slipped on to her back and fractured her sacrum and damaged her right elbow sufficiently to suffer employment threatening injuries.

She is entitled to Workers Comp but cannot claim for the first 2/5ths of a week. She may get 75% of her regular salary whilst off injured for the first six months. She cannot sue the employer but may make a decision within the first 180 days after injury to accept Workers Comp or sue a third party, in this case the cleaner, but seems there is no vicarious liability.

Bit of a disaster for the family as she is the breadwinner and main applicant for Skilled Worker Program. Applied over 12 months ago, nothing heard yet apart from initial acknowledgement.

Be interesting to see how the application for renewal of her work permit fares, due next January.

Be warned - do take out insurance for loss of earnings.
