For those who are planning to import their car(s) from US to Canada, below are the information that i have collected so far.

Things needed at the USA border.

1) Title
2) ITN (simplifiedtradesolutions.com AES ITN)
3) VIN#
4) email confirmation from the US Border protection, that you are cleared to pass (should be done 72 hrs before crossing).
5) Passports
6) I94 & I797

Additional docs :: Copy of Registration, Insurance cards, Proof of Inspection, Rental Contract (if towing/using rental vehicles)

Get the export stamp on the title at the US Border Protection office before heading to Canadian Border protection office.

Thanks for starting this thread. I am expecting my ppr in March. I have a new car on loan in the US. If I sell my car right now (I can't afford to pay off the loan) I will end up shelling out about 6000USD from my pocket. What are my options Apart from losing this money? Is there any work around where I can retain my US registration? I will be continuing to pay my car installments even if I move to Canada.

Thanks for starting the thread, it would be interesting to know if its possible to do use your personal car to landing procedure and return back to the US without importing the car. If not then what are the cheapest possible options?

Well answer depends on if you are planning to import the car later.

If yes, then you'll have to declare in Goods to follow list and customs will not let you take care in Canada during landing. Because its goods to follow - you're not importing. Landing means you're PR in Canada.

If no, then you'll not be declaring in Goods Accompanying and Goods to follow list. They'll allow you most probably, but catch is how you'll show them you'll take car back. Its a difficult situation.

I would not risk it and take a rental car to do landing by road. That's the cheapest - $200 per week almost for a car if you're in east coast.

You can fly as well, but cost increase depending on no. of dependents with you. Hope it helps you.

Thanks rpishare for the info, It definitely did help me. I am in NY so guess I will be renting a car since I will need a car to drive around once I am inside Canada.

Did you check with your bank weather you can keep the lien on the car in Canada? or possibly transfer the lien to Canadian bank once moved.
It majorly depends on bank if they provide this letter that you can export the car to Canada without closing a loan. I read somewhere in forum only someone mentioning same.

My findings so far. The lien is to be closed and the Title of the car should have you or your family member as sole owner to Export or Imports. Yes there are other ways to do the car on Lien, but per me, its huge and time consuming task. Reasons are, as rightly pointed out, Bank should transfer your lien to Canada, but to which bank and on what basis, are the open questions. Most of the US bank hardly operate on Canada side and they have huge fees and Tax on the other side.

Best way is to mention the car in "Goods to Follow", take a Rental car or by Flight (81$ if by JFK, NYC).

Hi Ganesha,

I had a conversation with couple of forum members regarding this. Here it goes. Hope it helps:

Hi sk13 and rathna,
Congratulations on getting Canadian PR!
I am slightly behind you in the PR process..waiting for PPR for self & spouse...but I am hoping to get it soon..
I read a few of your posts where you were discussing about re-entry to US even though stamped visa is expired. I would like to seek your advice on my case:

H1B/spouse H4 visa valid till: 20-Jan-2015 (so it has already expired)
Online i94 shows Admit Until Date: 2015 January 20
H1B/H4 permit extension: Under process with USCIS

Once we receive Canadian PR and I land in Canada, will we be allowed to re-enter USA within 30 days without re-stamping of H1B visa:
1) while H1B/H4 extension is in progress?
No -- the Re-Entry (AVR) is purely based on valid(VALID) i-94 & I-797

2) once H1B/H4 extension is approved?
Yes - All you need is VALID i-94 & I-797

Again Remember --> When you cross the border to CANADA, never , never, never give your I-94 at border. You need it to reenter. If they ask, give a copy but not original that comes with your approved i-797.

All the best!

Hello Guys,

While waiting for PPR, I have few questions.

For those who applied from USA, have you guys started applying for a job in Canada? do you get interview calls? Do employers in Canada consider USA experience when considering candidate for a job? Please share your story to help me and others.

My Two Cents on this.

Searching for Job from USA is simple and you can get it easily.... But the truth is all the Employers are requesting for "IN-Person" interview procedure. I have applied for most of the company and ended up for in person request. Since I'm planning to land around April 1st week, most of the recruiters advised me to apply a week before the landing date and not like a month before. This case is with the Major Cities like GTA, Montreal and such ... Recruiters informed me that employers from Major cities would only prefer inperson discussion. Other cities and suburbs may differ.

USA job experience is definitely a plus ... The reason is it has more or less has the same culture.

Not sure how some one can be so friendly to share their documents...
But this is the link for the form from CIC
