Dear seniors,

I am a new immigrant and want to file my first tax return in coming March. I have no income in Canada as I am working abroad and shall be going to Canada in March'2015 for goods. Please tell me which particular form/ forms shall I be submitting, attach link if possible. Is it correct that being a first timer, I can't do it online !
Any other suggestions/ tips for a first timer will be appreciated.
Thanks

Since you will be resident from March 2015, you would have to file your 2015 return by April 2016.

This link should help you. www.netfile.gc.ca. There seems to be some confusion about the tax year. The return for the tax year 2014 is due by April 2015 and the tax year 2013 return was due by April 2014.
I suggest you also try H&Rblockonline.ca and they will guide you through the process as this is your first filing.

I would ask any company that you use to help with your taxes if they have experience in dealing with your situation. CRA expects you to report and pay taxes on your worldwide income. If you've already been taxed in the country you already earned the income, there could be tax treaty in place with that country which would prevent you from having to pay tax twice on the same income.

thank dear, I am also in search of a good accountant / tax company. It seems quite a complex matter and needs to be addressed with great care. Specially the worldwide income issue.

get T4 summary from the firm you worked or proof of your salaries from other countries
enough for filing returns

2014 T1 returns must be filed before 30th April 2015, including international income
2014 T2 return must be filed before 30th June 2015

Hasni,

It's really not that complicated. You have clear residential ties to Canada with your family living here and with you having processed your DL and OHIP here. As a result, you will be considered a resident of Canada for tax purposes, and will be subject to tax on all of your income, regardless where it was earned. If you opt not to declare said income, that's your prerogative; however, doing so will be illegal and may subject you to all sorts of penalties and fines if you are caught.

[/quote]thanks torontosm, how about if I have lived less than 182 days in 2014 in Canada, would I still be considered a resident for tax purposes.
Any rough idea about the minimum worldwide income, after which your money becomes taxable. I don't have any source of income in Canada yet. Will I have to attach the proof of my worldwide income while filing the tax return. Thanks

Hasni, the 182 days is irrelevant in this case as you have clear residential ties to Canada which make you a resident for tax purposes (http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/nnrsdnts/cmmn/rsdncy-eng.html). Unlike the US, there is no minimum after which your money is taxable. You are liable for tax on every dollar earned anywhere in the world. you can report the income without providing backup documentation, but I would advise you to have it ready in case the CRA asks for it.
