Border officers are authorized to check your laptop or personal phone, that's right. But why would they check that?
If you haven't been arrested or were involved in whatever illegal stuff, you don't have to worry about anything.
I've been traveling for years with phone and laptop and my devices never got checked for messages or files. NEVER.
All that said, as long as you don't have illegal stuff on your personal devices, why are you worrying at all?
I am asking Daveyboy that was the one who mention it.

thank you very much for your replies i appreciate your response

I finally found an email address and requested my LOL to be emailed to me as i didnt receive one in Sep 2012 when my welcome letter was emailed, i was lucky enough to get a quick response (two days) and have now printed it off ready for my entry into CANADA!!!

what an awesome service, i was fearing no response or delayed (too late) response and feel so relieved now.

Thanks again everyone for your time

BE SURE TO DOUBLE CHECK YOUR DOCUMENTS BEFORE YOU LEAVE EVERYONE I'M GLAD I DID. :)
Hi, I'm also from Australia and haven't received my LOI. I sent 2 emails to questions@cic... but I've received no response. Was this the email you sent your enquiry to?

Mine was slightly more complicated than I thought it would be.

I travelled out to Canada (5th time in one year) got stopped and warned.. let in with 3 months to spare.. while I was still waiting for my LOI to come through.

I finally received LOI but had to do a flagpole in order to get it so down to the states I went by car.. Scared beyond belief as I thought they'd deny me and give me 4 days to go home lol.

No they were all awesome - even the US customs were nice.. me coming down and not having an ESTA visa in my hands, so got "denied by will" to the us and into Canada.

It all went smooth they simply just ask for your LOI and who I'm planning to stay with and where. They did ask me for proof of health insurance, but not all officers ask you that. I would strongly recommend you have it with you however.. And no need for a return flight as they surely know it can be difficult to plan for a flight a year or more ahead so just bring sufficient amount of money to prove them you are planning to return. And as most no jobs are lined up, so bring extra money in case you have a hard time finding a job.

Easy it is... Really no need to worry!
