I've been put in touch with a consultant in Canada who has told me he will help me with the application and get a job for me. The total cost is $15,000. I am wondering if anyone has experience with this and can tell me if this amount is worth paying?

If he can arrange a genuine job letter with LMIA, then only the amount can be justified.
otherwise immigration cost for a single applicant is as under:
1. Evaluation of education (WES): INR 20000/- (approx)
2. IELTS: INR 10600
3. Application fee: INR 25000/-
4. RPRF: INR 22500/-
5. Medicals: INR 4500/-
6. PCC and transcripts: INR 5000/-

7. You still need funds to show (12000 CAD) = INR 6,15,000

(If you have a job offer, you don't need to show the item #7)

Before you show the item#7, you also need to account your "move" from home-country to Canada.
E.g. from India, It would be significant cost. approx INR 50000 (flight ticket), approx INR 20000 (CANADA related purchases, right from luggage bags, clothes, etc) -- total of almost ~ INR 70000 (~1400 CAD)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In my calculation, I always apply a safe/conservative margin of 5% to final "money required" to account for unprecedented expenses AND/OR currency fluctuation.

Thanks,

bhushan.

you need to clarify what your agents means, and how much are his fees...
