Dear Seniors,
My wife and child will stay in Toronto permanently after our first landing, while I will return my home country to earn salary to support them.
Now I want to file Child Tax Benefit application and find that my information, especially my income in my home country, has to be provided.
I am more concerned if I should apply it or not:
1). if I apply, do I need to file my income tax next year and thus do I have to pay income tax, although I did not earn one cent in Canada?
2). If i do not apply, it seems I have lost sth for my child as this is universal benefit for child across Canada.
Thanks for your suggestions.

I believe that since you have social ties to Canada, then you are considered as resident of Canada for tax purposes, and therefore should file income tax even though you yourself do not live / earn income in Canada.

Remember, the CCB (Canada Child Benefits) is filed by the mother, not u. So, your income would fall under the Family Income, as spouse's income.

I have a question. If mother is unemployed (as I am preparing for my exams) can one apply for CTB on the basis of father's income?

The amount of income, or it's absence (father's or mother's) doesn't matter for the CTB Aplication. It's our right & any/everyone can/should apply for it.

It'd be "usually" filed by the mother, we have to show the gross "family income" for the last 1 yr. If she isn't employed - u write "0" against her income, but write whatever was the income of the father.

Eitherway u must yet apply for the CTB.

Hi All,

Just a clarification required. I landed as new immigrant on Nov 23rd, 2010 however I didn't receive the PR card from the authority. I applied for the CCTB after having the SIN card but my wife received a letter day before yesterday that my son is not eligible for the CCTB as per the date Jan 2nd, 2011.

I don't know what's the issue here, should I've to wait for the PR card to come and then apply again for the CCTB?

Please advise!

Regards
Farrukh

Hi Farook,

As I understand u must have filed the form wrongly - probably also your world income for the preceeding yrs. was 'high'. Thus, the CTB got 'inapplicable' for u. Furthermore, there has been certain 'changes' in the CTB since 2011 - however, it's not w/drawn, as I know.

Hi Qorax
Need your help
I have landed in Canada recently and will be staying for could of months only; we would probably move permanently after 1.5 years.
Should I apply for Child Benefit now .
Since i will not be paying tax this year, still child benefit can be claimed or it will be discontinued if you are not paying any taxes?

Thankss

If you are not in Canada, you can't claim it.

@ Qorax: Sir, so as soon as we have our SIN and Bank account, I should file for the CTB already? What income should I declare, the income I had after my resignation from my former employer? I already have my 2010 Income Tax return (will land in Canada by May). Can't I declare that I don't have any income and no work yet (I assume I would be employed after a few months of landing). My husband is still employed but he will go to Canada with us. I should file his 2010 income also?
