I am Canadian, my husband is American and our daughter was born in the US. I want to make sure that I am going about this the right way because it is very confusing.

I need to get her Citizenship Certificate and so I have filled out an application for Certificate. What docs do I need for her proof? I have her US passport, birth certificate, but it seems that the guide indicates I should have to more items of proof of her identity - she is 9 so I am not sure what I am going to be able to obtain.

Also, because we live in the US and I am going to send copies of these docs, do I need to have them certified?? if so, who can do that? I dont have access to Judges or Magistrates.

Thanks

Our son was born in the US and if I remember correct all we submitted was copy of US birth certificate and proof of mothers citizenship (Canadian),plus passport size photos of the baby. He was only 4 moths at the time and this was all we had - my son didn't even have a US passport. No certified copies as far as I can remember. We had the certificate within 30 days.

Good luck

Wow, that's super fast. I see it taking 10 months on the processing timeline right now.

I just did this for my kids. I took copies of their birth cert, passports, and social security cards and also copies of my own proof of ID and took them to a notary, who stamped them and wrote that they were true copies of the original. Sent it to the consulate for my area (Boston) and also sent the request to expedite (go to the cic website and search for expediting request, I am not allowed to post links on here for some reason) as we needed them asap for our move to Canada. It said it was taking 5-7 months or longer. I got confirmation letter saying they'd received it about a month or so later with 'request for expediting duly noted'. But it still said it was typically taking 5-7 months. Then out of the blue last week, they called me to verify I was still at this US address, and they mailed out the certificates (which are actually like ID cards) for both of the kids. So it ended up taking about 2 months, maybe a little more. Hope this helps!
Oh, and from the research I've done, they will let the kids into Canada even with just the letter showing you've applied for the certificates, and this letter will also do for health insurance, school, etc if necessary.
