what i heard is that they do test for AIDS / TB / General Urine / General chest X-Ray.
so, the chances are that your cancer may not be detected unless they do a blood TLC/DLC and find something unusual.

I guess, I have an answer for you...
Go for it... but, make a strong case that your cancer was eliminated 4.5 years back. some cancers today are curable and they ma consider.
Get tests done in advance showing no signs of cancer with your file. send a cover note to CIC Sydney along with Xerox of fresh reports. If they accept your case, then, send original reports to you local CHC along with your file.
In most likelihood, if your cancer is truly eliminated, they will consider.
They may ask for a few extra tests from some lab approved by them during the medicals phase.
Overall, the canadian immigration process is quite reasonable. I'm sure they'll oblige.

The thing is that Sydney probably won't even look at those documents, so until it goes to the visa offices you will not really know.
Why don't you speak to a CIC approved doctor and see what s/he says.

As far as i know, the medical test is for detecting any illness which is contagious in nature. Because they can be harmful for public wellbeing. In your case cancer is not a contagious disease as far as i know and it is already cured in your case. Consequently it will not have any adverse effect on your immigration application. I think you should go ahead confidently. Good Luck.
The medicals are for two purposes, to eliminate danger to the Canadian public due to contagious diseases and well as prevent undue stress on Canadian health care. Since the cancer is cured that many years ago, I don't think it will be a problem. It may depend on what kind of cancer it is, how likely it is to come back. You may need some extra doctors reports to show that it's gone.
