Nice to remember: always ask what's going to be a TOTAL price monthly :) You can sign up for 2-years $50 plan and will be surprised by monthly payment of, let's say, $75 which is: $50 + connection fee + administration fee + hidden fee #1 + hidden fee #2 + installation fee + blah blah fee and so on and so on...

You have to look at the plans carefully and compare between providers, including hidden fees. They used to have a system access fee, $6.95 a month that was only charged to plans, not to prepaid. They abolished that in 2009 but instead they raised the prices and added other hidden fees, see http://www.thestar.com/business/article/1219658--cellphone-users-still-paying-system-access-fees

Not much you can do though if you want to have a cell phone.

You can get one at Rogers here: http://www.rogers.com/web/link/wirelessBuyFlow?forwardTo=PhoneThenPlan&productType=normal&productId_Detailed=IP516BLK&N=52+11 for $179 with some 3 yr. plans, same at Fido, see http://www.fido.ca/web/page/portal/Fido/iPhones#iphone5_tab and same at Telus: http://www.telusmobility.com/en/ON/iphone5_16gb/index.shtml and same at Virgin, see http://www.virginmobile.ca/en/phones/phone-details.html?model=iphone516&colour=Black&contractTerm=SP2 and same at Bell Mobility, see http://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Products/Apple-iPhone-5#INT=MOB_moblistinghmpg_BAN_iPhone5_mass_091221_TM_ALL and that is all the mobile phone companies I can remember at the moment.

You can look at their plans online and find which is best for you. I noticed right on the website of one of them it said only with a plan that is $50 a month or more. Best thing for you would be to go to a mall and visit all the cell phone shops and ask what kind of plan will get you this phone that you want. Then compare the plans before you decide which provider you want to go with.

If we change the service provider, can we retain the same number?

Yes, as long as you do not move to a different area code, see http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/info_sht/t1025.htm

You need to ask your new provider about keeping your number before you cancel the service with the old provider.

Public mobile - I pay $50.85 (inc. taxes) per month - no contract. I did not opt for data plan and phone, that can be done with few more bucks.

I get the following:
  • unlimited incoming.
    unlimited local outgoing
    unlimited Ontario outgoing
    unlimited USA outgoing
Unlimited outgoing (long distance) to 45 countries including India.

very good connectivity and signal in GTA. no issues so far...

If you are less fussed with budget plans I would suggest talk to Bell or Telus. Reasonable plans with excellent coverage and relatively good service. Not a big fan of Rogers. Had some bad experiences with them. Also watch out with some of the smaller operators especially on data packages. They will often set a data cap, but let you run over and charge you exorbitant amounts for overages. Stepped in that trap once or twice as well. Very annoying. If you are planning to obtain other services like cable and internet, take a look at some bundling options. Might save you a few bucks.

Good luck
