Birth Certificate

So when we were doing up the sponsorship and PR forms, we were confused by one of the things on the checklist and when we called CIC, they said we didnt need to submit my spouses Birth Certificate - that it was only if he had children being sponsored/applying for PR as well to prove relationship.
Now I am starting to panic if that was true or not? All they have for Photo ID of him was the main page of his US passport?

We provided a translated version of my Bfs birth certificate. Under the document checklist for the United States under the civil & identity I recall it saying to provide birth certificate for you and your family members. I'm not 100% sure we were supposed to send it. Maybe a senior can tell you for sure!

Country specific notes USA - Appendix A checklist states:

IDENTITY AND CIVIL STATUS DOCUMENTS
Provide birth certificates, baptismal certificates, national identity card or certificate (Cedula) where available, or other official document confirming relationship (including all pages of Household Registries) for you and each of your family members.

Were we supposed to include birth certficates for my children from my previous marriage that are canadian citizens then?
I wonder if that is why the person on the 1800 # got confused and said we didnt need it, saying since I wasnt sponsoring a child from a previous marriage on his side (because he doesnt have any), that we didnt need it since they didnt need to confirm relationship if no kids were being sponsored since he doesnt have any from a previous marraige.
