I'm currently in US and both my wife and I don't have birth certificates. Can class 10th certificate and passport be used instead because both of them have the date of birth on them?

Don't you have national birth certificates (from your own home country)? If you have your national birth certificates then you can translate them in your consulate general wherever you are right now and they will accept it too.In our case we have the same,we have our national birth certificates, went to our cosulate general in Chicago and they did translate and put an official stamp of the Consulate on it,and it cost us only $18 for 1 certificate.

I don't think so these documents will substitute your birth certificate, you will be needing a birth certificate which should be translated by a certified translator if it is in a different language(not in English).
