My husband has a work permit, which he obtained because he is doing a post doctoral fellowship at a Canadian University.

His visa expires Jan 2012, but I am pretty sure his PR won't be approved by then. I understand that he is able to renew his visa because it's not a straight up open work permit, but a special visa given to people to come develop their skills (that's what they told me in immigration)

Does anyone know if it's possible? Has anyone done it?

Any comments would be appreciated

I am also a post doctoral fellow in Canada. Your husband can renew the work permit by submitting an application at citizenship and immigration canada either online or through regular application.

I'm a postdoc, too, and I renewed my temporary work permit 3 times already. However since it is still a temporary work permit (but LMO exempt), he would still need a new contract/offer letter to do so. You have to submit the new job offer letter stating the salary with your (online) application. No job offer, no temporary work permit will be granted.

So if I understand correctly, he can renew his current status because it is LMO exempt, but he is not able to obtain a regular open work permit.

I am so worried about this because he had a job interview and they are definitely interested in him, but I am worried his PR won't be approved in time... We honestly don't know what to do, because he doesn't really want to continue this postdoc, and his visa expires Jan 30...

Do you have any idea where I can figure this out with? should I call CIC?
