I'm torn as to how I feel about having a real winter again. I have been in the Seattle area for almost 9 years now but I still can't get fully used to all this rain and the grey. I know it will be a huge shock for my husband and kids though next year! They are all used to if it snows there is maybe two or three days of it and then it is all gone and it might get to -10C. Funny story from my past though... I grew up in Nova Scotia and out there they canceled school if it got to -30 with windchill. My family moved out to southern Alberta when I was in jr. high and I remember the first really cold snowy day my mom came into our rooms and told us not to worry about getting up because they were going to cancel school because it was -30 today. My sister and I thought Great! and went back to sleep. A little after lunch the school called to see if we were sick and why there hadn't been a call to let them know and my mom told them that we weren't there because of school being canceled because of the cold... they laughed and told her that they don't cancel school unless it is -50 or colder... and it got down there a bunch of times!!

lol :D ithat sound bad! i've never been to Edmonton but everyone says its crazy cold and lots of snow. southern Ontario in Kitchener where I am is sunny and +5 although right now, it feels a bit warmer though. not bad at all so far and no snow anywhere on streets or side walks. from the comment sounds like there is snow fall and cold in Edmonton already?
It is currently -15 C and snowing. There's not a lot of snow falling right this moment, but it's falling on top of the several inches already on the ground.

It's probably not so bad once I'm used to it, and I'm making a point of not being stuck inside. Speaking of which, I need to take out the trash, time for my eighteen layers of clothing! (The other day I was out and some old guy on the sidewalk said I was dressed too revealingly. His complaint was that the top button on my outer jacket was undone. I was confused)

I want to go make snowmen and such, but it's just so cold out! I need better winter pants or something. Also better gloves. And then to find a hill and do sledding. Also driving is scary.

This snowfall wasn't too bad compared to the one few weeks back. Today driving was ok. But City of Edmonton sucks in clearing snow. It seems like the snow trucks are more concerned about laying gravel on the road before clearing the snow. How about clearing snow first then shoving that gravel in there. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like they take forever and everyone drives at 10km/hr. This is one of the many reasons i hate snow. Cold is ok, snow not ok.

I feel bad lol but I can't help to just laugh a bit because the way you explain and i'm picturing it just cracked me up lol :D you sound pretty scared ;D
hopefully you'll have some fun at least sledding/skiing and snow balling. you gotta make it fun since it isn't going away anytime soon. you just have to dress warm.

Good thinking there! :) one of the many reasons we chose BC, and Victoria at that... :) currently sunny and a balmy 11 degrees outside... My partner is from Edmonton originally, but I have lived for 10 years around the Mediterranean and there was no way I would choose Alberta ( for a visit to family it's great, but every day... not for me!). Last three years spent in Sweden (cold and grey!) was a good preparation and just confirmed... let's head for the "warmest part of Canada" :) Good luck for the harsh winters...

Yeah, unfortunately the snow clearing in the city isn't great, it's all about priority roads! I'll remember that next time I buy a house ;)
I don't mind driving on the icy roads, I HATE parking lots! People drive like idiots in them at the best of times but with the ice it's ridiculous. That's why I've done all my Christmas shopping already (and why I park at the Boubon Street entrance at WEM!!)

I would love to live in Vancouver (it was always my long term plan) but I can't handle the rain, it's too much like England, which is why I've come back to Alberta! It's cold, but usually dry!

Well what about Victoria? apparently there is a micro-climate here and it rains less than in Vancouver :)

Love these threads that can help with the monotony of dealing with immigration....

My husband has been in Canada for 4 months (from Morocco)...he arrived Aug 1st and has been wearing long underwear since beginning of Oct hahahaha :p

We had a lovely dusting of snow one night and he was watching the flakes land on his black coat. He said "Look at them, why do they do that?" He was talking about the shapes they form. How each is different. He was fascinated.

As another member said...it is awesome to see the reaction from them. Child like and so excited. Makes me appreciate some things I have taken for granted living here all my life. ;D

Haha That's funny. My husband wants to buy me long underwear and I'm a girl and I say:" What? I'm not wearing long underwear under my jeans, no no no"
but he insists, and I'm just visiting a week or two at a time.
Do you girls wear another set of pants/long underwear under your pants/jeans? :-X If you do, I'll consider it lol

I wore mine once or twice last year, but only because we were skating on an outdoor rink, but I don't really get too affected by the cold. My sister wears hers way more. I would recommend having some just in case.

Just thought I'd share a love of winter
Diary of a Demented Snow Shoveler
Diary of a Demented Snow Shoveler

December 8 6:00 PM

It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!

December 9

We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the whole world? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had!
Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a
boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. - This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life!

December 12

The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a
disappointment! My neighbor tells me not to worry- we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is
such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14

Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night. The
temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes
everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is
the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't
realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15

20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska , after all.

December 16

Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17

Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go
anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe
I'm freezing to death in my own livingroom.

December 20

Electricity is back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling! Took all day. The damn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying.
Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

December 22

Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white *censored word* fell today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss. By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy. I think the asshole is lying.
December 23

Only 2 inches of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she, nuts?!!
Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.

December 24

6 inches - Snow packed so hard by snowplow, I broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a *censored word* who drives that snow plow, I'll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100
miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.

December 25

Merry f---ing Christmas! 20 more inches of the damn slop tonight - Snowed in
The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God, I hate the snow!
Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's a fricking idiot. If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.

December 26

Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea.
She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27

Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze;
plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.

December 28

Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. The *censored word* is driving me crazy!!!

December 29

10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I everheard. How dumb does he think I am?

December 30

Roof caved in. I beat up the snow plow driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only for the beating I gave him, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass. The wife went home to her mother.
Nine more inches predicted.

December 31

I set fire to what's left of the house. No more
shoveling.

January 2

My wife has left me to return to the heat of south Texas, have barricaded myself in what is left of my car... I think I hear the SWAT team coming... we shall see

January 8

Feel so good. I just love those little white pills
they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

?
