A little background, first. I am sponsoring my spouse. She is currently visiting me from China. We have been married for 11 years. Her son is married and living/working in Russia. The instructions for documents states:

"If you hold a passport from this country, you and your family members included in the application must provide:
  • The household register called the “hukou”.
  • Proof of marital status for children 16 years of age and older."

Unfortunately, for translation purposes, we do not have the originals for these documents. We only have copies. The Marriage certificate has a "Verified True copy", with a thumbprint, but it's written in Chinese, not English. The hukou copy has nothing.

Do we need to have the originals sent from Russia and have them translated, or can we use translations of the copies?

Translation of documents
You must send the following for any document that is not in English or French, unless otherwise stated on your document checklist:
  • the English or French translation; and
  • an affidavit from the person who completed the translation; and
  • a certified copy of the original document.
Certified true copies
To have a photocopy of a document certified, an authorized person must compare the original document to the photocopy and must print the following on the photocopy:

You are not required to send the original document to IRCC, unless requested in the checklist or country specific requirements......but need to send a certified copy......the problem you may have is that the authorized person who certifies the document will need to see the original document and compare to the photocopy before certifying the photocopy.

Are you sure that you need docs for her son? He is not a member of her family any longer and should not be included in the application. It looks like the documents you are referring to are required only for the members of the family included in the application.

You sir, are absolutely correct. I re-reviewed the guides, and the regulations, and he only needs to be included under "Additional Family Information", where she has to list her deceased parents and brothers/sisters (IMM 5406).
