Hello.
I came to Canada in February to do a research for a university. I came as a visitor once I would be staying for less than 6 months, but we decided to extend this research for more 4 months. Following the university advice, I applied for a work permit and I just received a refusal letter from immigration. The letter said I cannot apply for this type of work permit within Canada, but I have to apply in another Canada Visa office.
Right now my status as a visitor has ended.
Should I try to apply again? I can send this time a letter from the university explaining the reason for my extension.
I could also restore my status as a visitor visa but it takes a long time for that...

If you don't wish to leave Canada, then you must apply to restore your status since you have been refused and your visitor visa is no longer valid. If you don't wish to apply for restoration, then your only option is to leave Canada.

I assume you stopped working as soon as you received the refusal. You cannot work while out of status in Canada.
