I am hearing this interpretation of implied status for the first time. Multiple CIC call centre agents have confirmed to me that I can enter until 31st midnight, provided I carry proof that my extension application is in process, and continue working on implied status.

I would like more opinions on jes_ON's question as well

1. If you submit an extension request (with an LMO, if required) and you leave Canada and return within the validity of the CURRENT work permit then you can continue to work at the same employer under implied status, until you receive either the approval/refusal from CIC.
2. If you submit an extension request (with an LMO, if required) and you leave Canada and return after the work permit has expired then you will be allowed entry, but will NOT be permitted to work until you receive the work permit.

EXCELLENT, thank you!

Thanks PMM. That clears the confusion

Until the 31st of December you have a valid work permit, so you can travel and come back before it expires with all the proof CIC agents adviced you. Your implied status will start on the 1st of January and you are not adviced to travel after the 31st, as you can loose it. There is no overlap in implied status and current work permit, your implied status starts from the time your WP expires not from the time you send your application for extention in. Hope PMM can confirm this for you once again to make it all clear.
