I am currently completing my Bsc Nursing in Jamaica . I am interested to work in Canada . What are the steps to work in Canada as a registered nurse.

I am suppose to graduate 2017, get license in 2017.

I will really appreciate the help.

Thank you.

Once you finish your degree, you will need to be certified to work in Canada as a nurse (CNA). To the best of my knowledge, the exam you need to take to be certified can only be taken in Canada.

Next you would need to obtain a full time job offer from an employer in Canada and that employer will have to obtain an approved LMIA. Then you can apply for a work permit.

Health professions are regulated at the Provincial level, so depending on what province you want to live in, you would have to take exams and be certified in that province.

The regulating body is usually something like "College of Nurses of PROVINCE" - here, for Ontario -
http://www.cno.org/

They usually have sections on their websites for internationally trained nurses -
http://www.cno.org/en/become-a-nurse/new-applicants1/outside-canada/

Some provinces have "bridging" programs for internationally trained health professionals. Here is an example for Ontario.

;D hello!!! Im currently living in Puerto Rico and I am a Nurse. Have 8 years of experience. I would love to relocate to Canada , the BC area , with my husband and children. What are the steps I should take in order to do this. I know I would need a work visa and also take the exams necessary to work as a nurse there, but what should be done first, work visa , search for job , or take the exam. i have two smallchildren so I want to make this process as smooth as possible and the right way.
Thank you!

There was someone on this forum, a registered nurse from the US, who came to Canada and had hard time getting job, can't remember his/her ID but there was a lot of ranting from this ID...

Hello,

As soon as you have received your Jamaican nursing license, apply to NNAS for assessment of your credentials. You will also need to be successful at the CELPIP or IELTS. Once NNAS gives you the green light, you will apply to the province of your choice to have the NCLEX done. After successful completion of this exam and you have obtained your Canadian license, then you can apply for jobs in Canada. After securing a job, your employer in Canada will then need to apply for a LMIA for you to use as supporting documents to apply for a work permit in Jamaica or to apply for Permanent Residency.

That's basically it in a nutshell. While processing your documents, get some nursing experience in Jamaica.

I thought I was suppose to do a clinical exam

No clinical exam.

Visit the NNAS and regulatory body's websites so you can have a better understanding of the process. So, for example, if you would like to practice in Alberta, you would visit the CARNA website along with the NNAS website. CARNA is the regulatory body for Alberta RNs.
