Hello Everyone,

I am from Singapore and have intention to go over to Kelowna to work after graduation as my boyfriend is currently studying at Okanagan College. Singapore is not applicable for IEC work permit, thus this is an issue.
May I know
1) To apply for work permit, must I have a job offer from an employer beforehand?
2) Am I able to apply for it and then proceed over to Kelowna to find job?

Also I'd checked, I can apply for an open work permit if I'm on a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). And that my boyfriend can invite me over to Kelowna as a visitor with TRV. How does this actually work and how long will the TRV and open work permit be valid?

Need help as I can't seem to find any answer online :(
It will be better if someone who has done that before can let me know the procedures.

Looking forward to any replies.

Thank You!

1) To apply for a work permit, you must first secure a job offer from an employer in Canada and your employer must obtain an approved LMIA. The LMIA process takes 4-6 months to complete.
2) No - see above.

No - you cannot apply for an open work permit if you have a TRV. You are confusing TRVs and TRPs. A person is only eligible for an open work permit if they hold a TRP. A TRP is a special permit that's difficult to obtain and that is reserved for people who are otherwise inadmissible to Canada - typically due to a crime. A TRV is a regular visitor visa.

Just to add to the above, if you come to Canada as a visitor and marry your boyfriend - you will qualify for an open work permit based on the fact he is your spouse and holds a study permit. This is likely your most realistic option.

If you marry your bf and he is still a student you may get an SOWP. They are not guaranteed for spouses of international students.
