So I've never had an OWP before, but can I just jump into a job now? Someone wants me to work this weekend doing some construction. I have the OWP to show them. Would I need anything like a SIN or anything prior to doing that? Any illumination on the topic is appreciated.

Yes - you need a SIN. You should apply for one asap if you want to start working.

Before starting to work, please go to Service Canada and get your temporary SIN. Don't forget to bring your OWP and passport. ;)

Find a Service Canada Office

So its probably not worth it if my landing interview is Nov 20th?

Some, offices don't have a separate room for processing your SIN after landing interview like Vancouver(read in 2012 thread someone has to wait) where, one has to wait to get PR card first and then apply for it. So, you should check if your office provides SIN on the spot.

can I use my temporary tax number in place of a SIN?

Your OWP gives you authorization to get a SIN
Your SIN gives you authorization to work...

Go to Service Canada and get your SIN, it takes no time at all. Make sure you also bring something with your current address on it! Bring everything you can think of...they can be real sticklers down there LOL

Your temp tax number means nothing...your new SIN will replace that when you go to do your taxes in February :)

One thing we learned throughout this whole process, is go into all these offices with more information then you need, or you end up waiting for nothing...some people can be helpful, some just want the paycheck!
