Hi everyone, I need some help understanding the timing for renewing my TRV.

Here are my details:
  • I’m currently on an Open Work Permit (OWP) that is based on my wife’s Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP).
  • Her PGWP is set to expire early next year.
  • We’ve already applied for Permanent Residence through Express Entry — we received our Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR) and did our biometrics over a year ago.
  • We just submitted applications for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) for my wife and another OWP for me.

Now, my TRV (Temporary Resident Visa) is expiring in a few months, and I want to renew it.

I was told by a few people that I should wait until I receive my new OWP before applying for a new TRV, because otherwise, the TRV will only be valid until the current OWP expires (early next year).

Is this true? Is it because Canada no longer issues long-term (10-year) visas like before?

If anyone has gone through this, could you please share your experience?

Should I wait until my new OWP is approved (which could take around 8 months) or can I apply for the TRV now?
Also, should I apply for the TRV through the IRCC portal or use the GCKey? Not sure which is better or preferred for this situation.

Thanks in advance!
