hello,
I will soon be eligible to make an application for citizenship.
For 1 out of the 4 years, I was working in my home country.
What should I write as the reason in the Residency calculator
Jan 1 2011 - Jan 1 2012 : Working in India - what is good way to state this?

Thanks

I don't think you need to make it too detailed. I think saying "working in India" is fine.

Hello in my case i put the name of the company where I'm working and the address of the company in my home country hopefully that was right.....i just sent my application Today and my family got their citizenship last Dec 12 it took only 8 months to process goodluck to all of us :D

If you immigrated 3 years ago and if you use online residency calculator, it will only ask you to provide details since you become PR.
in this case, you don't have to worry about anything.

If you came to canada 4 years ago and left india for 1 year then yes, the residence calculator will ask you to provide details and its good to provide complete details rather than one sentence answer.

Did CIC CO ask your family WHY you did not apply with the family or any other question on you?

Residency calculator does ask for it and also in the application form, there is space to mention.
I am unsure of how much is enough to write, like: I was working as a independent consultant in my field of work and used to do work almost exclusively for a certain company. What would be a best way to demonstrate this?

Thanks

Please provide the details about your timeline when you came first time to canada, when you became pr, when you went back and when you came back to canada etc.
