Thanks so much Patiently, you're a star! Great website!

We're hanging in...my gut feeling is that we'll hear something back the end of this month or beginning of next. Seems like things slowed down since the Christmas holidays. Our PR application isn't even "in process" and it was transferred to London nearly two months ago. However, I don't think I have much to complain about since many individuals have been waiting months and even years!

Hi it's true in most part that federal government positions you have to be a citizen, but it is not true in the case of provincial and municipal governments. I have been working for the Ontario Provincial Government for a year now and I haven't even got my PR yet (on a work permit). In fact my work permit runs out today but my manager has been really good to me and has said she will keep the position open for me in the hope that my PR comes through in the next few weeks.

I think the key to the Canada job market is network network network!!! government jobs at all levels here are extremely difficult to get as they are unionised and very few get advertised as open to the public. However the key is to get the names of managers/directors of the ministry/areas you think you would like to work in and email them your resume and express your interest. This is what I did and after a few weeks I got a reply back asking me if I was interested in a contract position ie 6 months and from this you are eligible to apply for the permanent positions that are only advertised internally. Nearly everyone I work with got into the Ontario Government this way.

It can take time and it is a difficult nut to crack but it is possible. There are several people working in my department who are PR's rather than citizens including a couple of Brits.

Anyway I am more than happy to offer advice.

Cheers

what kind of field do you work in?
what ministries do you think i can apply too?
i dont even know what ministries exist there! in toronto.

I work in the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, and my area is in Policing policy, as I used to work for the Home Office in the UK.

I would suggest looking at the Ontario government website if you are interested in working from them and looking at the various ministry websites to find out what there remit is etc. Most ministries are based in Toronto but they also tend to have satellite offices around the province. Most municipalities tend to have there own employment sections as well.

Once you know what ministry you would like to look at I would suggest using the info directory link below which can give you more detailed information on the various departments within the ministries and possible contact details for the people in those departments.
