HI, I am applying for Canadian citizenship under the family class sponsorship scheme. Does anyone know if there are any restrictions on my ability to work in Canada once I become a permanent resident. I'm applying from outside of Canada. IS there a time period when I first arrive that i'm not legally allowed to work?

Thanks guys.

You are applying for permanent residency, not citizenship. There are no restrictions on your ability to work once you have landed as a permanent resident. You just need to apply for a social insurance number and you can work. There is no time period where you are not legally allowed to work after you have landed as a PR.

BTW, loving the name.

Thanks for the quick reply. Any idea how long it takes to get a social insurance number?

Usually they give you the number as soon as you apply for it. You apply in person at a Service Canada office. The actual SIN card takes about a week or two to be mailed to you. But the number is all that's required to work.

The only restriction is that you can't apply for high level security positions.

And for all government jobs, preference is given to Canadian citizens.
