What is the program you are applying for? Is it a certificate, diploma, masters or vocational?

I think , if your study period is less than 18 month, only one year work permit will be issued....rest lets wait what seniors says..

17 Months study permit - So I am assuming it's definitely not 1 year program as even if there are back to back three semesters, it ends within a year.

As per Black and White information (CIC website), applicant may get work permit of a duration compared to duration of actual study.

However, the ground reality is ( basis what people have been getting), he/she will get a work permit of three years. Ask your friend, is it a two year program?

People who complete 1 year study (be it UG diploma or PG diploma/certificate) and if they pursue another program of 1 semester, even they get three year work permit, now this is basis what people have already tried and got three years work permit. Now, this info you won't find anywhere in CIC but from the people who actually got it this way, the only condition to it is, student shouldn't apply for PGWP after completion of 1 year study. He/she should rather take further study permit of 6 months and complete one semester program.
