I am a canadian citizen and my bf is in canada on work permit. He is an indian citizen and his work permit expires in aug 2012. How can we extend his work permit? Is there a way for him to stay in canada, we are planning to get married in 2-3 years so any other option?

If you are in Canada too, and can prove that you too have been living together, then you are considered as common law partners, bears the same status as married couple. With that your bf can apply for PR. Seniors kindly correct me if I'm wrong. Though he might leave Canada once his work permit expires, and be back once his PR is approved.
