I have a study permit but i want to apply for a 4 month work permit. I can work on campus with the study permit. Will CIC allow me to have both study permit & work permit at same time (I wish to work for one semester before continuing studies).

1. You can have an off campus work permit once you have completed 6 months, which allows 20 hrs. of work during semesters and full time between semesters.
2. If you mean get a regular work permit through the LMO and application, no you can't have both.

Hi PMM,

Thanks for your response. I thought the same until I read this:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/faq/study/study-work-faq02.asp

Can I still work in Canada even if I don't apply under a student-related work permit program?

If you are not eligible or do not want to work under a student-related work permit program (such as the Off-Campus Work Permit Program, On-Campus Work Program, Post-Graduation Work Permit Program, or Internship/Co-op Program), you can apply for a work permit to work in Canada during or after your studies under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. See the Related Links section at the bottom of this page.

It is illegal for you to work in Canada without a valid work permit.

Note my second reply. If you get an LMO and then secure a work permit, CIC will issue the work permit, but it will come with the restriction that you can't study.

I thought it just says "This work permit does not allow you to study" something like that, so doesn't that mean that if you get a study permit as well, then you can study too? It says "during" on the post above so I'm guessing you can have both

Hi, I'm just curious where'd you get this info? Did you call CIC or is it posted somewhere? I'm trying to find it online but it doesn't say anywhere in their website that you're not allowed to get both.

PMM,

Please can you let me know how you got the information that you cannot work & study at the same time? This will really help me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise! Here is the full scenario:

Arrives in Canada with study permit - January 2010
Studies for one semester.
Study Permit valid till January 2011.
Received Job Offer: September 2010

Intention: To now register part time this september for studies & take up full time job offer! Is this possible & can work permit be processed within two months? Is LMO needed?

Hi PMM,
I am on a work permit. I applied for part time study permit (flight school on weekends). It got denied. I got to know about that on the phone. I will receive the denial letter next week.
Do you know any workaround with this? I am working full time but i want to spend some few hours every weekend flying. Something must be there. When i called CIC they themselves are confused about it. Asked their managers. And different guys give different answers. They even called me and apologised to me earlier on phone for giving wrong info on PR so i dont trust them.
3 guys at CIC told me to file a new study permit so i went ahead with them. And those b a s t a r d s made me wait for 7 months for decision and wasted my full year. I would've done it in usa had i known cic works like this.

Do you see any way out of this? studying part time while on worker status.
Course duration is 1 year.
