For a self funded internship in Quebec, should one obtain a work permit(with labor impact assessment exemption) or a business visitor visa(self funded research)?
I have a letter of invitation. The internship is self-funded so I will not be getting any salary from my employer.
Please also tell me about the processing times of the two visa's and which of them will be easier to get.

Sorry - to answer your other question, plan for several months. The LMIA can easily take 2-4 months to process. The employer must also complete a month of advertising to prove no Canadian could be hired for the role.

It can be difficult to get an approved LMIA for internships. So I would have a back up plan in case the LMIA is refused.

Business visitor visas cannot be used for internships.

I think my application would be LMIA exempt in case of work permit. The employer will have to fill up a form to get the LMIA exempt status.

Also for business vistor the site says:

Self-funded Researchers (Visitor status) (R 186(a))
According to CIC regulations, persons who are doing self-funded research may meet the definition of business
visitor (Visitor status) and do not need a work permit. Therefore, an offer of employment does not need to be
submitted through the Employer Portal. The conditions to be met include:
As such, the Self-Funded Researcher comes to Canada to acquire knowledge and conduct research at their own
expense. Each file is assessed on a case-by-case basis by CIC.

Also the internship duration is from may-july 2016

Is it an unpaid internship? Or are you actually coming to do real research? What are you going to be doing (which industry) and for how long? Your first post made it sound like an unpaid internship. An unpaid internship requires a work permit which requires an approved LMIA (even if you aren't being paid).

I will be doing a summer internship in a university in Canada under a professor. But the professor will not provide me funding.
