Hi, I'm an international student with a student permit that was issued after June 1, 2014. I've got a SIN number from Service Canada, and now I have a part-time job for the summer while I'm not taking any summer school.

The problem is, the hiring manager from the work didn't quite understand the new immigration law (which allows international students to work just with their student permit under certain circumstances, like being enrolled in a designated learning institute as a full time student) and got really suspicious if I was really legally allowed to work in Canada because of my visa statement that says "Unless authorized, prohibited from engaging in employment in Canada". I told him me having a SIN number is a proof of authorization, but he still was doubtful and asked me to bring an official work permit or at least the work permit number.

Based on some of the posts from this website and others, I've brought him a copy of my SIN number issuance from Service Canada and even copies of CIC website pages about working off-campus with student visa to prove that I am legally allowed to work in Canada. Yet he's still insisting on me having a work permit number otherwise he won't give me the job.

I've been trying to call and connect to a CIC agent on the phone for days ever since but I kept on getting disconnected because the line was too busy. The only numbers I can find on my student permit are the application number, UCI number, and a number that's on the right top side of the document paper. Are one of those used as a work permit number for international students? Also, can anyone clarify the authorization statement please?

Thanks in advance!

I suggest you seek assistance from your school. Their international student affair can advise you. Also, start sending email inquiry to CIC.
