Work permit from inside Canada

I'm British and want to move to Canada. I'm currently in Toronto and looking for work. An employer approached me to work in Halifax.
Is it possible to start working while waiting for a work permit to be approved? How long is the work permit processing time?

No you cannot work without a work permit. How old are you? Do you have an approved LMIA For the job? Have you applied for a closed work permit?
