Work Permit expiring - applied for extension - can I leave Canada?

Hi

I have applied for an extension to my work permit that is due to expire on May 20, but I would like to travel to the US but return on one day before my permit expires.
Can I travel to US and will Canada let me in? Or do I lose my status as a “worker” or “implied status” if that applied to me.
