Work permit expired, got accepted to stay as a visitor. Can I travel from Canada to Mexico and back?

Hi!
I'm from Sweden and I arrived in Canada in November on a working holiday visa which expires now (May 1st). 2 weeks ago I got accepted to stay as a visitor here in Canada but I have yet to receive my physical visa in the mail.
My question is: Can I travel to Mexico for a week and then be able to get back to Canada?
My plan is only to stay for two more weeks after our Mexico trip. Will it help if I buy a flight ticket out of Canada?

If you are holding a Swedish passport, you are visa-exempt to Canada but will probably require an eTA if you don't have your visa with you.

So I have to apply for a new eTA and I'll be good to go? Would be terrible if I'm not let back in because I have all of my stuff here in Canada

No harm in going that route. It's not a huge investment to cover the bases.

Sorry to bother you more but don't I have an eTA from when I got my working visa? I thought it was on my passport for some years

An eTA only lasts for a limited period. Simply apply for a new one anyway.

1 ETAs are normally issued for 5 years or the expiry of the passport, whichever comes first.
