work experience issue

Before coming to Canada for school, I have worked for a company in my field for about 2 years. I didn't have any records with them and paid in cash. I have absolutely no records from this time, besides their word. They have agreed to give me a letter of employment verification and recognize this time as "full time" but they are worried that this might get them into trouble with their own government.

They are under the impression that the immigration would contact their government which would get them in trouble.

My lawyer informs me that the immigration is not authorized to contact any governments on my behalf, and all they would do is to make a phone call to the company, if that.

What methods do the immigration take to verify past work experience?

A reference letter with the following:

Your evidence should include a reference letter from your employer and previous pay stubs, where available.

The reference letter is an official document printed on company letterhead and must include your name, the company's contact information (address, telephone number and e-mail address), the signature of your immediate supervisor or personnel officer at the company and a business card of the person signing the letter. The letter should indicate all positions held while employed at the company and must include the following details: job title, duties/responsibilities, job status (if current job), the dates you worked for the company, the number of work hours per week and your annual salary plus benefits.

We dont know how they confirm work exp. They will not call the govt of any country for 1 applicant that is for sure but even if they call the employer or not it is hard to tell. Get the official letter from your company and locate your former manager and ask him to write a work exp letter like CIC wants it with duties and salaries and get this letter notarized. Submit the notarized letter with the official letter and explain in LOE that why cant you get it on company's letterhead. Hope this will help

Thank you very much! It's ok if they call the employer, they are more then willing to help. They are giving me a letter of employment verification with the letterhead - they just want to know this won't come back to bite them before approving it.

So you are saying this wouldn't come back to bite them? Or should I be getting a letter without the letterhead?

You need a letter with letterhead even if it is a normal letter which every company gives after the end of job. And with it you can ask your former supervisor or manager to give a letter on plain paper like CIC demands with salary duties etc etc and get it notarized. And after ITA submit both the letters and explain in LOE that your company have given you a normal letter as they did not want to issue such a letter on letterhead and your manager has given you a letter which you have made authentic by getting it notarized and any other proofs you can give like pay stubs bank statement showing salary transfer etc etc.
