If my husband (from Ireland/visa exempt) comes to toronto on a visitor visa for 3-6 months will this effect his application? It's already in London (second stage) and we are really curious if him coming here on a visitor visa will effect his application being in process?

Not at all. A lot of people (myself included) come to Canada as visitors to stay with their partners while waiting out the PR. (I've also updated my address to Canada.)

If anything, it proves the relationship is genuine.

Just a note of caution although what Kayaker has said is completely true and he probably will have no trouble getting in, it is better to travel with all his documents advising that the PR application has been submitted and a return plane ticket. If he simply turns up at the border and tells them he's hear to wait out the PR application, there is a risk...if small that he could be denied entry. Although I'm guessing from what you said he's just coming for a visit so he should be fine.

Sure - don't say he's "moving" - just say he's visiting.

A return plane ticket would help - he could also get a fully refundable ticket and refund it after he enters Canada.

As long as he makes it clear that he knows he is visiting, that he cannot stay indefinitely and cannot work or study, that he will leave within 6 months or apply to extend his visitor status, he should be alright.

And if they stamp a date on his passport that he has to leave by, don't fret - he can apply for an extension online and that is fairly straightforward.

I'm Irish and I made it in no prob; I don't even have stage one approval yet!
I was travelling with my Canadian husband and Canadian infant son which I think helped.
I had my receipts and CIC correspondence at hand in case they asked for it but they didn't.

I recently came back to YVR as a visitor whilst PR pending (waiting for stage 2) and I did get a bit of hassle from the border guard. I naively assumed he'd be able to pull up all that kind of info on the computer but instead he just asked tons and tons of questions. When I offered to show him any documentation I could pull up on my smartphone he wasn't very receptive at all. In the end he said he'd "give me the benefit of the doubt" and abruptly reminded, "Don't work."

I would advise having some copies of paperwork/letters ready along with passport for the border. Proof of funds or something stating you will be supporting him would certainly be useful.
