Hi. I'm sponsing my boyfriend as a common law partner. I moved to the UK last November (2014) and I was living with him, his siblings and his parents. We then moved out in January (2015) and got our own appartment. I know that you need to prove that you've been living together for a year so do you think that CIC will accept a letter from his parents proving I was living with him and them, plus our lease that has both our names starting from January? Were only applying when it's been a year so either in November this year or January next year we are apllying. We just wanted to know if we could apply early in November. We also have bills and other things. Thank you

I think common law apps require a notarized letter confirming the relationship.

Bonus advice: nowhere on the app or in front of the CBSA or CIC should you call him your boyfriend. This kind of sponsorship is for spouses and those in a spouse-like relationship. Calling him your BF gives them the opportunity to question your relationship and you don't want that.

If the only proof you have for those 2 months is a letter from his parents, then you should just wait. If you have more proofs such as mail at his parents address or bank statements for those months with that address, then you should be fine to submit in November.

Common-law apps actually require 2 statutory declarations from family members or friends.

If you haven't done so already, consider getting a joint bank account.

Not all companies will allow it but try and get both your names on the account for things like the energy, council tax, the internet/phone, anything else you pay for.

Basically, as others have said above, it's all about showing the two of you are in a committed spousal relationship and have combined your lives - rather than just two people who have happened to live together for a year (who may or may not be boyfriend and girlfriend)

I realize it's kind of a nitpicky thing. I know in real life I'd feel like a tool calling someone my common-law spouse. It's just really important in all your dealings with CIC, CBSA and especially when landing or, god forbid, during an interview, that you NEVER call him a boyfriend.

I've preferred the term "life partner".

For the time difference, I'd wait for January. One less thing to stress about.

Instead of just a letter, create an actual lease/rental agreement everyone can sign that covers those few months. You can download countless blank lease templates online, and just fill in the dates, address, landlords info (parents) and renters info (you and your bf). That will serve as official lease for that time.

Of course if you don't want to go through the hassle, then just begin the 12 months clock for cohabitation starting in Jan 2015 when you got your own apartment. So basically you would just submit the PR app in Jan 2016 instead of Nov 2015.

We have everything in both our names. Basically everything that's required for a common law application we have. I was just wondering about those months I was living with my bf parents. I have to leave the UK next November so that's why I wanted to apply early so we can get a decision before I leave here

eh
I guess its mindset. I haven't referred to my partner as my boyfriend for eons. He's more than that and has been for years. I usually spouse or partner, or just by his name to people who know us. It is important (as others said, including bigredmoose) that you get used to referring to him as your partner, spouse etc. :)
