Hi guys, i'm an 18yo fresh out of high school in australia, would like to know how this whole process works and what would be required!
Canadians seems to have the ultimate lifestyle and i would like to go there. I was thinking of possibly going with a waiver or working holiday visa. I would really love to get a job over there, but i would be classified as unskilled. Would prefer in BC, but really anywhere i can get a job in the electrical industry as an apprentice, that would be great. I was reading that BC construction industry is growing rapidly so being an electrician there would be great. Please recommend a better way of doing this. Would it be better if i became an apprentice in australia?
I think ill have to stay in australia for another year just to earn money to last the length of a waiver anyway. How much money would be required to get by? What documents would i have to prepare to show customs. the CIC website says i need to do an english test but i've been using english as my primary language all my life?
A massive hole in the armour would be applying for jobs - would employers be able to look at an australian resume and understand what's what? What about references and referees?

Im looking at applying for a passport now, hearing what you guys have to say and then hopefully as soon as i touch down i can get a SIN and start looking for jobs!
if you need anymore information like current job, approx earnings etc please ask because this is my current life goal and im looking to start it now :) thanks

I'm not sure what you mean by a "waiver". With limited work experience and no employment offer in Canada, your best bet would be to come to Canada temporarily through the Working Holiday Visa (IEC) program.

Sorry i shortened from the visa waiver thing, i think it's called esta because i read that it applies to canada aswell?

ESTA doesn't apply to Canada. Yes - you can visit Canada without a visa (because of the passport you hold) and look for a job here. However without an IEC visa, finding an employer willing to go through the expensive and lengthy process of hiring you will be extremely difficult. You should definitely go the IEC visa route.

Ok awesome, but what good is handing them an australian resume? because i've searched for jobs on job boards etc. and they say they need work experience in canada already and certain qualifications that you can't get in australia? or are the jobs online only scratching the surface of the range of opportunities? Like do employers put you on a trial week or 2 like they do here?

Employers aren't going to look at your resume now because you don't have a visa to work in Canada and the process they would have to go through to hire you is so long and expensive. That's why everyone is ignoring you.

Again, get an IEC and come to Canada. It will be different once you're here and in the possession of a work permit.
