Congrats on your newborn.

If the Canadian parent was born outside Canada.....your newborn is not a Canadian citizen (1st generation limit rule unless exceptions to the limit apply).....and needs to be sponsored as PR to Canada.

If the Canadian parent became a citizen by birth or naturalization......your newborn is a Canadian citizen........the official way to confirm citizenship is to apply for Proof of Canadian Citizenship..

........A Canadian citizen is not eligible to be sponsored and cannot be issued a visa.........I guess the mother of your newborn is abroad........so if the mother is been sponsored as PR......the newborn cannot be added to the PR sponsorship application.

If the mother is a Canadian Citizen or PR in Canada or a citizen of a Canada visa exempt country (e.g., UK) or has been issued a Canadian visa.........you may have to send a concurrent application for Proof of Citizenship and limited validity Passport through the Canadian Embassy in the country the baby was born.......the passport will be urgently processed and issued with a limited two (2) years validity.......but this will require proof of urgent travel such as Flight booking of the child and parent.

Otherwise, you may have to apply for for Proof of Citizenship and Passport through the Canadian Embassy in the country the baby was born........current processing time for Proof of Citizenship application through embassy abroad is around 5 to 6 months........not 13 months.

If you are applying for a minor.......all questions in the application apply to the minor.....refer....If you live outside Canada and the United States.

Since your son was born outside Canada......you need to apply for the Proof of Canadian Citizenship through the Canadian embassy in the country where the baby was born.

Some Canadian embassy abroad do not accept mailed in applications and require in-person applications with original documents........so will advice you check with the embassy to know embassy specific requirements.

Since you the father is currently residing inside Canada, you may have to mail certified notarized copy of your Canadian Citizenship Certificate to your wife to include in the application.......because the Canadian parent citizenship proof will be required.

The current processing time for a straight forward application for Proof of Citizenship for applicants in Canada and US varies from 2 to 5 months.......and an additional 1 to 3 months is required to mail approved citizenship certificate via embassy abroad.

Although, you will apply abroad, the application for proof of citizenship certificate is processed in IRCC Canada and not at the embassy abroad.

Will advice when you complete the application form - CIT0001E that you fill only the City Name in the Home Address field (do not provide the home address) and fill the father Canadian Address as the Mailing Address in the form.......so when the certificate is approved it will be mailed to your Canadian Address which will help eliminate the additional 1 to 3 months required to mail approved citizenship certificate from Canada via embassy abroad to the applicant.
