Hi everyone,

I have just returned to Canada in Jan 2020. I had a great overseas income in 2019 and based on the CCB calculator, it seems that I wont be receiving any CCB on my 2019 income. However, things have changed and now I'm unemployed. If I have no income in 2020, when will be the earliest time I start receiving CCB. Will it only be after July 2021 after the assessment of 2020's income?

Also, given that I haven't worked at all in Canada for 2019, do I have to file taxes in April/May 2020?

Thank you

Are you a PR/citizen?
is your child living with you? Is he/she 18 and under?
2020 income will be the determining factor of how much your CCB will be from July 2021 onwards provided your child is still 18 and under and living with you in Canada.

Not sure if you "have to" but if you want any benefits for 2020 I think you need to declare it. Call CRA to be sure.

It is actually 2018 income that is determining CCB payment up to Jun 2020.

If your 2019 income exceeded the max for CCB, then yes, you will only receive CCB after July 2021 when the benefit is based on your 2020 income.

If you want benefits, yes, you need to file.

Hello,

Yes I am a pr and my boy is 4 years old, living with us.

Alright, so in this case, the earliest I would get CCB payments would be July 2021.

Thank you for the reply.

Yes - you must declare your worldwide income in your Canadian tax return.
