I had filed my application for Immigration using assistance of CanadaVisa in August 2007. I was assured by them when filing that though the normal time to get through with the process was 36-48 months, since I was using the service of CanadaVisa, it would be between 18-24 months. It is over two years now and I haven't heard anything regarding even the file being moved forward. It only shows 'IN PROCESS". What is the waiting period when registered through CanadaVisa ?

I have never heard that applying through a lawyer/consultant was any faster than doing it yourself except possibly in the case that if you were doing it yourself, you might risk filling something out wrong or missing some documents.

You can see processing times here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/international/02a-skilled-fed.asp Just look for your visa office in there.

Consultants/Representatives do NOT impact the processing time. You may have the most well-known consultant for Canadian Immigration, yet your case will be treated at par with someone who applied on his/her own. With regard to "in process" showing for your application, this is good news. What it essentially means is that CIC has found your application ELIGIBLE for processing. Your next step will be receiving instructions from CIC with regard to medical examination. Just be patient and wait for the same.
